The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) today (October 02, 2017) provided a monetary donation towards the Caribbean hurricane relief efforts which are being coordinated in Guyana by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC). The Union’s donation arose out of a decision taken at its General Council meeting on September 30, 2017 where members, among other things, reflected on the tragedies spawned by the hurricanes in the Caribbean.
The Union’s General Council was especially moved by the substantial and horrendous destruction to property and infrastructure and more so the loss of lives, and the suffering and deprivation that now confronts thousands of our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean states of Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda. CDC Director, Colonel (Ret’d) Chabilall Ramsarup who received the Union’s donation expressed his appreciation and pointed out that it would contribute to assist in the CDC’s effort to channel relief to the two Caribbean states.
In the past, our Union has positively responded to the demands stemming from natural disasters locally and abroad as well. On this occasion, the sugar workers wished they could have contributed in an even more generous way. However, they today find themselves in difficult times having had no pay rises since 2014 and, for a great lot of them, are being confronted by joblessness.
