– 390 workers rendered jobless
2018 also brought the curtains down on BEV Processors Inc which closed its doors in July, 2018 and some 390 persons losing their jobs. For the workers it was an unexpected, and certainly an unwelcome, shock when they learnt of the sad news. The workforce was largely made of up females, many of whom are single parents, and they were already hard pressed with the circumstances of life.
The Company had explained that several factors influenced its decision to close operations. Among those were the substantial decline in the prices being received and the costly process to secure Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. The Company was also concerned whether the Government would renew at year-end the concession through which fishing companies are allowed to purchase fuel under arrangements whereby lesser taxes are paid
