We cannot consider 2019 without taking account of what prevailed on the political scene which has national implications as well. It did not escape us too that today’s activity is being held on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the now infamous No Confidence Vote. Indeed, in the year that has followed we have seen several matters arising to the fore. The happenings of 2019 have brought into question respect for our laws, our traditions and most of all our democracy. This year has showed us that those in power will spare no expense; they will endure any criticism, and would easily walk outside the lines to perpetuate their authority. We have seen what we deem as the naked attempts to trample our people’s democratic rights. During the year too, we have seen the expressions of our people to defend their rights and protect their gains. These are laudable steps and demonstrate that our people are aware of the situation and will stand-up to defend their gains and protect their rights.
2020 is projected to begin with the elections campaign taking centre stage. Several new political organisations have appeared on the scene with their own points-of-view in mind. While democracy promotes the participation of all, their sudden appearance does raise eyebrows. Our Union also, at this time, looks to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to put in place adequate systems to safeguard and to ensure that the Official List of Electors (OLE) is properly reflective of the electorate; that the Guyanese people’s franchise is properly recorded, and that our elections in the end are deemed free and fair and also free from fear. Indeed, this undoubtedly is the wish of the Guyanese people at this time.
