The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) has recognized that many Guyanese, in several parts of the country, have chosen to take to the streets to register their dismay about what seems to be concerted attempt to snatch democracy and undermine their will. While we support Guyanese to enjoy their right to publicly express their upset, we have seen that several of the incidents have taken unsavory turns.
It was disheartening to learn and to see on social media members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have resorted to using tear gas and pellets ostensibly under the guise of restoring order. Several protestors, we gather, have been injured. We did see, in one instance, what appeared to be an indiscriminate use of pellets by a member of the police force. We hope sincerely that this is not the case though we urge that a full investigation be pursued.
At this time, while we uphold our right to protest, we urge such activities be peaceful and within the confines of the law. We call on all Guyanese not to block thoroughfares or to engage in confrontations. We also call on the Police Force not to use any excessive means which could inflame a combustible situation.
The Federation reiterates again its unequivocal call for the lawful process regarding the tabulation of the elections results be abided with for Region Four as it was done for all other regions.
