The formation of CARICOM, now almost 49 years ago, represented yet another step to consolidate relations among the countries of the Caribbean. Our nations had shared a common colonial bond and our development largely mirrored each other which provided further impetus for our coming together. Prior to CARICOM, several attempts were made to build integration within the region and while those attempts recorded varying degrees of success, CARICOM has endured the challenges and difficulties and in so doing fostered closer ties within the diverse Caribbean region. At this time, we of the GAWU salute the people and countries of the Caribbean on this occasion of CARICOM Day when we pause and reflect on our accomplishments as a region and the objectives we have attained through our collective actions. This day also gives us an opportunity to consider the times we live in and the period ahead as we fortify actions to bring us closer to our goals.

As we salute CARICOM, we recognize the efforts of the founder nations which saw the importance of regional collaboration. We also recollect too the efforts of the labour movement in promoting regional collaboration and cooperation. Today, nearly half a century after its formation, CARICOM stretches from Bahamas in the north and Guyana and Suriname in the South and is home to several million people. The works of CARICOM over its years of existence has demonstrated the wisdom in the decision to advance its development. Through the CSME today our region is even closer as we materialize efforts to harness our potential in the interest of regional development.

As we celebrate CARICOM Day 2022, we note the efforts of Guyana in leading role within the region to reduce food extra-regional food importation by 2025. This we believe is a laudable development and given the crisis of food is certainly needed at this juncture. In this regard, we recognize the commendable leadership of President Irfaan Ali in seeking to advance this very important issue of our times. We also recollect, at this time, the interventions of CARICOM towards the restoration and protection of democracy in Guyana. Indeed, in the interest of brotherly relations CARICOM has stood by Guyana in its most darkest of periods.

The GAWU, at this time, takes this opportunity to wish all Guyanese and indeed the Caribbean peoples a happy, safe and enjoyable CARICOM Day as we celebrate what makes us as a people unique.
