The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) today (August 03, 2023) held a simple activity to present bursary awards to children of union members who sat the National Grade Six Examination (NGSA) in May, this year. The activity held at the GAWU’s headquarters in Kingston, Georgetown saw twenty-four (24) students receiving bursaries from across the union’s membership.
GAWU’s General Secretary Aslim Singh, who spoke at the activity, offered congratulations to the students on their achievement. He shared that the Union, like their families, were proud of their success and wished them well as they entered a new chapter of the educational pursuits. The General Secretary emphasized the importance of education especially in the context of Guyana’s development ambitions. He noted that there are high expectations for a bright future for our country and he urged the students to maximise their education to play an even more meaningful role. It was recognised that the students were challenged not only by the difficulties of exam preparation, but their education was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The General Secretary placed additional challenges on the students but expressed congratulations that the students were able to surmount the difficulties and succeeded. All in all he expressed hope that the students continue to excel during secondary school and beyond and reminded them that learning is a lifelong activity as he urged them to keep abreast with developments and changes.
The Union’s Vice President Harvey Tambron also spoke at the activity offering congratulations to the students and their families. He recognised too the importance of education in the success of life and urged the students to continue to work hard and dedicatedly. GAWU’s Executive members, Gordon Thomas and Julius Nurse also made brief remarks congratulating the students on their achievements and shared that education is critical in today’s world.
The Union, over the years, has been providing bursaries in recognition of the success of the children of union members. It is one of the several benefits that the GAWU offers to its membership. The Union placed significant emphasis and a high premium on education. The Union believes that education is critical to ensuring success and efforts to encourage learning are supported by the GAWU.
