The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and relatives of Supernumerary Constable Mr. Latchman Raghoo, who tragically lost his life following an incident at the Albion Estate.

The Union is profoundly saddened by this loss and stands in solidarity with all those affected by this unfortunate event. The loss of any worker in the workplace is a serious concern, and our thoughts are with the bereaved family during this challenging time.

While GAWU acknowledges GuySuCo’s statement regarding a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident, the Union calls for a full, transparent, and comprehensive investigation. This investigation should aim to establish the facts surrounding Mr. Raghoo’s injury and subsequent passing, identify any underlying causes or safety deficiencies, and determine whether existing occupational health and safety procedures were adequate and properly implemented. Furthermore, it should result in clear recommendations and corrective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

GAWU also urges GuySuCo to strengthen its occupational health and safety protocols across all estates and workplaces. This includes ensuring that workers and other personnel are adequately protected, properly trained, and provided with necessary safety measures and equipment.

The Union believes that occupational safety must remain a fundamental priority in the sugar industry. Production and operational demands should never compromise the protection of workers and others performing their duties within the Corporation’s workplaces.

GAWU extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Latchman Raghoo. May his soul rest in peace.
